Domain Transfer
How do I
transfer a domain to Licosys?
Before proceeding with the Transfer,
you are advised to first check the following:
Confirm if
your Domain Name can be Transferred
There are various cases where a
Domain Name MAY NOT be Transferable to another
Registrar. This could happen in the following
circumstances:
(a) Domain Name is less than 60
days Old - If the Domain Name you are trying to
Transfer is less than 60 days old, the request will get
rejected by the Registry itself. Domain Names less than
60 days old are not allowed to be Transferred to any
other Registrar as per ICANN Guidelines.
(b) Domain Name has been
Transferred less than 60 days ago - A Domain Name
cannot be Transferred to another Registrar within 60
days of a previous Transfer. For example, a Domain Name
cannot be Transferred from Registrar B to Registrar C,
if it has been Transferred to Registrar B from Registrar
A within the last 60 days. An exception to this rule is
the Transfer back to the previous Registrar in cases
where both Registrars so agree and/or where a decision
in the dispute resolution process so directs.
(c) You have Locked your Domain
Name - If you have Locked your Domain Name from the
Control Panel provided by the current Registrar, then a
Transfer Request for that Domain Name will not be
allowed. You will first have to unlock the Domain Name
from the Control Panel and then proceed with a Transfer
Request.
(d) Your Registrar has applied a
Lock or Hold on your Domain Name - If the current
Registrar has applied a Lock or Hold on the Domain Name
due to some pending issue, you would be advised to get
in touch with their (current Registrar's) Support Team
to resolve this issue, before applying for a Transfer.
(e) If the Domain Name is in the
Redemption Grace Period or in the Pending Delete status,
the Domain Name can not be Transferred.
NOTE
The .WS Registry does not support
Transfer of Domain Names between Registrars. Hence, a
.WS Domain Name cannot be Transferred under any
circumstance.
What is Domain (Transfer) Secret or
Authorization (Auth.) Code and how you can obtain it
from your Current Registrar?
A Domain (Transfer) Secret or
Authorization Code is a code assigned by the Registrar
at the time the domain name was registered. This Auth
Code acts like a password for a domain name. Domain
(Transfer) Secret is an extra security measure, ensuring
that only the owner of the domain can transfer their
domain name.
To transfer any domain name of any of
the following extensions, you would require to first
obtain the Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code from
your current Registrar:
- .com
- .net
- .org
- .info
- .biz
- .us
- .in (along with any third level .in domain like
.co.in)
- .name
- .mobi
- .cc (not compulsory)
- .tv (not compulsory)
Ideally, your domain name's Domain
(Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code should be available
within the Domain Name Management Interface provided by
your Registrar. In the event that you are not able to
locate your Domain (Transfer) Secret or Auth. Code, you
need to contact the Support Team of your current
Registrar, to obtain it. Once you have confirmed the above,
you may place a Transfer request for your Domain Name
with Licosys Technology Company, by following the below
mentioned steps:
Domain Transfer Process:
-
Login to your Licosys Domain Control
Panel.
-
In the Control Panel, go to
Domains -> Domain Registration -> Transfer. There,
enter the Domain Name you wish to Transfer and the
Domain (Transfer) Secret.
-
Select the various Contacts
(Registrant, Admin, Technical & Billing Contact) for
this Domain Name. You may select from the available
list of Contacts or Add a New Contact.
-
It is compulsory for you to agree
to the associated Product Agreement(s) by selecting
the check box.
-
Finally, proceed with the Payment
of the Invoice.
Now that you have placed the Transfer
Order, the Administrative Contact for the Domain Name
will receive an e-mail from Licosys Technology Company
for the Transfer Authorization process, which needs to
be approved within 5 days (or else it is assumed that
the Admin Contact does not wish for the Transfer to
complete and the Order is Deleted in our system).
Once the mail has been approved by
the Administrative Contact, the Current Registrar will
be notified regarding the same. The Current Registrar
will send an e-mail to the Registrant and/or the
Administrative Contact of the concerned Domain Name to
confirm that they wish to Transfer their Domain Name.
If the Transfer is not denied by
either the Registrant or the Administrative Contact or
the Current Registrar, the Domain Name will be
Transferred to you under Licosys Technology Company in 5
days.
IMPORTANT NOTE Lost one
year when transferring a Domain Name from one Registrar
to Another
This is a common caveat that most
people are not aware of. Here is the explanation for
this issue. In any domain transfer
process there are three entities involved-
Typically a Domain Name is
transferred sometime before its expiry in order to renew
it with the Gaining Registrar. This results in ONE YEAR
getting added to the domain name. The charges for this
one year are collected by the Gaining Registrar. There
is however a case when it seems as if this one year is
not added during the transfer process. You need to
understand this so that you do not make the mistake.
Basically if a Domain Name Expires,
it is not deleted immediately. The Registrar of the
domain name must explicitly delete the name within 45
days or else it is deemed to have been renewed. This
period of 45 days is called the Auto Renew period.
If during these 45 days the
Registrant Renews the Domain Name with the Losing
Registrar and then TRANSFERS the name to a new Gaining
Registrar, then in that case the Domain Name WILL lose
the year that was added with the Losing Registrar. Lets
take an example.
Suppose a domain name expires on 1st
Jan 2001. Lets also suppose currently this domain is
with Registrar A.
-
On 3rd Jan 2001 (after the domain
has expired) you renew the domain with Registrar A.
The domain has already expired, but not yet deleted,
so you can safely renew it with Registrar A. This
will make the expiry date as 1st Jan 2002.
-
Now on 10th Jan 2001 if you
transfer this domain name to Registrar B this is
what will happen.
-
The transfer will add one year to
the domain name (expiry date will be 1st Jan 2003).
-
If there has been any renewals in
the 45 day auto-renew period those years will be
removed (expiry date will be reset to 1st Jan 2002).
The net effect therefore will be -
that no year gets added to the transferred domain. It is
however important to note that the year during TRANSFER
is ACTUALLY ADDED. The reason why the expiry date does
not reflect it is that the year added in renewal with
the LOSING REGISTRAR is credited BACK to the Losing
Registrar by the Registry.
You can do the following things in
this situation:
1. MOST IMPORTANTLY. Do not Transfer
a name from one Registrar to another during the 45 day
auto-renew period immediately after the expiry date of
the domain name. Therefore, if a domain name expires on
1st Jan 2001, do not transfer it to another Registrar
until 15th Feb 2001.
2. If you have already done this
mistake however, the only recourse is to obtain a refund
from the Losing Registrar for the renewal you have paid
for with them. There is little scope of getting it
considering that most Registrars may not understand this
issue or may not have a refund policy.
